Hi, I’m trying to figure out how to get Freeview on my TV. I’m not sure if I need a special device or if it’s built in. Can someone walk me through the setup or let me know what I need? Any help would be great!

To access free UK channels, you will require a television with an in-built Freeview tuner or a Freeview set-top box attached to an aerial.

To get Freeview, ensure you have a TV with a built-in digital tuner or a Freeview set-top box. Connect a UHF aerial to your TV or box, perform a channel scan in the settings, and you'll receive over 70 free standard channels.

If you want Freeview on your TV, here’s how I did it — simple steps:
  1. Check if your TV has a built-in Freeview tuner (look for “Freeview” in the TV manual or model specs).
  2. If not, buy a Freeview set‑top box (or a PVR/Freeview+ box) and plug it into your TV with an HDMI cable.
  3. Connect an aerial/antenna to the TV or box (roof or indoor aerial depending on signal).
  4. Turn the TV/box on and run the channel scan / auto-tune in the settings — it finds all available Freeview channels.
  5. If reception is poor, try moving the aerial, switching to a rooftop antenna, or using a signal amplifier.
  6. No subscription needed — Freeview is free, but there are paid add-ons if you want extra services.
(Freeview names/lineups differ by country — the steps above work for the UK, Australia and NZ variants with small differences.)

For your television set to receive Freeview, it is necessary to have an aerial linked to a television that is compatible with Freeview or a set-top box that can decode Freeview signals. This is to be followed by the tuning process where you will see the steps on the screen of your TV.

To obtain Freeview on your television you simply require a functioning TV aerial (or equivalent connection) and then connect it either into your television or set-top box and then scan or auto-tune the channels. There are also versions (Freeview Play) which demand the use of internet/broadband to access on-demand content.

If your TV has a built-in Freeview tuner, just connect an aerial and scan for channels. If not, you’ll need a Freeview box connected via HDMI.

You need a Freeview-compatible TV or a separate set-top box/recorder.
  1. Connect a working UHF aerial or satellite dish to your device.
  2. Go to the Menu/Settings and run a channel scan (or 'Tuning') to find and save all available free channels.
  3. For catch-up, connect to the internet for Freeview Play.
