What Does Archive Mean in Gmail?

I keep running into the "Archive" feature in Gmail, yet I don't totally understand what archiving in Gmail means or what really happens to emails after I archive them. Are archived emails deleted or just relocated somewhere else? How can I access archived documents later? It would be great if someone explained in a simple way how the Gmail archive feature works.

Gmail Archive refers to taking an email from your inbox and setting it aside, without deleting it; the message is taken out of your inbox but still remains in your account under "All Mail, " so you can locate it later by using search or labels.
