How to get effects on Google Duo?

I just started using Google Duo, and I saw that some folks had fun filters and fancy visual effects during video chats. I don't see a way to turn on effects in the app. How can you get effects on Google Duo, and are they available on both Android and iPhone? Also, do I have to update the app or change any particular settings?
