What Does SOS Mean On iPhone?

Can anyone explain what 'SOS' means on an iPhone? I keep seeing it pop up, and I’m not sure if it’s a signal for help or something else. Any advice or clarification would be great!
 
When you type SOS in an iphone, this translates as the phone being able to make emergency calls only since the device is not linked to an operator network. It is not a warning or fancy light--it only indicates that you can still make an emergency call even when you are not using normal service.
 
On an iPhone, SOS means that your phone can only make emergency calls since it is not hooked into your carrier network. It is no distress signal you made-just a network status.
