How to Know If Someone Blocked You on Instagram?

I think someone may have blocked me on Instagram, but I’m not sure how to confirm it. What signs should I look for, and are there reliable ways to tell the difference between being blocked, restricted, or having an account deactivated? Any advice would be helpful.

You may be blocked if you can’t find their profile, their posts disappear, messages don’t deliver, or search returns nothing. However, private account settings or deleted profiles can show similar behavior too.

You may be blocked if their profile no longer appears in search, you can’t see their posts or stories, and your messages don’t deliver. Note that account deactivation or privacy settings can show similar signs.

The following procedures can be used to verify a block:
  • Check Their Username: They might have blocked you or erased their account if they don't show up in the search.
  • Check Profile: You are blocked if you locate the profile but see "No Posts Yet" even though there are posts.
  • Check direct messages: You've probably been blocked if their name appears as "Instagram User" and you are unable to view their profile picture.
  • Use a Browser: While logged out, use a browser to search instagram.com/[username]. It's a block if the profile shows up there but not in the app.

Not‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ being able to find their profile when searching for it, not being able to see their profile picture and posts although the previous chats may still appear, and getting a “User not found” message when trying to open their profile via an old link are the things that will happen if someone blocks you on Instagram. The “User not found” message is generally understood as a sign that you have been blocked rather than the account being ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌deactivated.

If someone blocks you on Instagram, you won't be able to find their profile when you search for it, you won't be able to see their profile picture and posts even though the previous chats might still be visible, and you'll receive a "User not found" message when you try to open their profile using an old link. Instead of the account being canceled, the "User not found" message is typically seen as an indication that you have been blocked.

In case the profile is not found, viewed their posts/stories, and your messages display the message of no post yet, then they had blocked or deactivated their account.

Instagram is intentionally vague, but there are a few strong signs. If you search their username and nothing shows up, yet you know the username is correct, blocking is likely.
A quick check I usually do is opening an old DM thread. If their name appears as “Instagram User” and the profile photo is gone, that’s often a block though deactivation can look similar.
