How Long Can Reels be on Instagram?

Can someone help me understand how long Instagram Reels can be? I’ve seen different lengths and I’m not sure what the current limit is. If anyone knows the exact duration Instagram allows for Reels or any tips for choosing the best length, I’d really appreciate your guidance!

In early 2025, Instagram officially accepts Reels of up to approximately 3 minutes long in apps by recording or editing the video within Instagram, where creators have increased time compared to the previous 90 seconds long Reels. Videos that are slightly longer (up to approximately 15 minutes) can also be viewed as Reels, provided they are uploaded via device, but the videos which are too long when compared to the typical range or very long ones are not likely to be so heavily promoted. The majority tend to stick to the shorter lengths of (15-30 seconds) to achieve the best engagement although the maximum time is now about 3 minutes.

The official maximum length for an Instagram Reel is 3 minutes (180 seconds), which was extended from the previous 90-second limit. However, if you upload a video from your phone's camera roll that is under 15 minutes, Instagram will often automatically post it as a Reel.

By 2025, Instagram Reels may have a length of up to three minutes (180 seconds) when they are recorded or can be recorded in the application. Other creators might also post longer videos using special features or posts but most users are typically restricted to 3 minutes, with shorter length videos typically having a higher engagement rate.

Instagram Reels can currently be up to 3 minutes long, with a minimum duration of about 3 seconds. Creators commonly use lengths between 5–15 seconds for better engagement, but Instagram officially allows the full 3-minute limit if you need more time for tutorials, storytelling, or detailed content.
