want to get that brushed metal look on a custom front panel. what grit sandpaper should i start with?

Brushing aluminum is a simple way to create a clean, satin finish start by cleaning the surface thoroughly, then use fine sandpaper or a Scotch-Brite pad to rub in one consistent direction (never circular) to create even grain lines. Work gradually from medium to finer grit for a smoother look, keep pressure light and steady, and wipe off dust between passes; finish with a protective coating if needed to prevent oxidation.

yeah what raymond said is really good advice about the direction and all. for starting grit though, if your panel is already fairly smooth, i usually begin with 220 or 320 grit. if there are any tiny scratches you wanna clean up first, maybe 180 and then step up from there. consistency is key, honestly.
