The 'hand on shoulder' / two-guys meme explained

You know the one - two guys, one putting a hand on the other's shoulder like 'it's gonna be okay.' I see it used in so many different situations but have no clue where it started. Does anyone know the actual origin, and what it's 'supposed' to mean versus how people use it?

That is usually the one where a guy looks super stressed while his friend comforts him, and it is perfect for overreacting to minor inconveniences. It is hilarious because it makes tiny everyday problems look deeply emotional!
