Surface Laptop trackpad popped out or not clicking: how to fix

The trackpad on my Surface Laptop has kind of popped up on one side and now it either clicks weird or doesn't click at all. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it something I can just press back into place, or is the battery swelling underneath it (which sounds way scarier)?

If the trackpad is popping out it is almost always a swollen battery pushing it up from the inside. Stop using it right away and get that battery replaced before it becomes a fire hazard!

If your Surface Laptop trackpad has popped out, feels loose, or no longer clicks properly, first shut down the device and inspect the trackpad area for swelling or lifting of the keyboard deck. A popped-out trackpad can sometimes be caused by a failing battery expanding underneath, which requires immediate attention. If there is no swelling, gently clean around the trackpad edges to remove debris that may be blocking movement. For persistent clicking issues, try updating drivers through Windows Update and restarting the laptop. If the trackpad remains loose, physically detached, or the battery appears swollen, stop using the device and have it serviced by Microsoft Support or a qualified repair technician, as hardware repair or battery replacement may be necessary.

If your Surface Laptop trackpad has popped out, feels raised, or has stopped clicking properly, don't keep pressing on it. In many cases, this can be caused by a swollen battery pushing against the trackpad, which is a safety concern. I'd first check for any signs of battery swelling and stop using the laptop if you notice them. If there's no swelling, a loose trackpad assembly or debris may be the issue, but opening a Surface device can be tricky, so professional repair is usually the safest option.

Don’t press it back. A popped Surface trackpad can indicate battery swelling. Shut down, unplug, stop using it, and contact Microsoft/repair center. Try software fixes only if no swelling.
