oh man yeah i've been seeing this pop up a lot too. it's kinda creepy how fast it's gotten decent.
for me, the big giveaways usually are:
* **weird colors/palettes:** ai tends to use like, way too many colors sometimes, or shades that just don't quite fit a good pixel art palette. like it's trying to do a smooth gradient but forcing it into pixels, and it just looks muddy instead of clean.
* **inconsistent pixel logic:** sometimes you'll see pixels that are like... half a pixel, or they smudge where they should be sharp. it tries to fake antialiasing but ends up making things look fuzzy instead of crisp pixel art.
* **too much detail (or not enough):** for tiny sprites, ai will often throw in way too much noise and random detail that makes it hard to read. or on bigger pieces, some parts will be super detailed and others will be strangely blank or simple, like it couldn't decide what to focus on.
* **anatomy/object weirdness:** this is a classic ai sign regardless of style, but in pixel art it manifests as like, an arm being slightly off, or an object having an extra something that doesn't make sense, but it's hidden by the pixelation unless you look close.
* **shading doesn't make sense:** the light source can be all over the place. shadows might fall in weird spots, or highlights are just randomly applied. good pixel art usually has very intentional light and shadow placement because every pixel counts.
it's wild how it struggles with some basic pixel art principles even as it gets better at general imagery. still has a long way to go to replicate truly skilled pixel artists imo.
