How to check for and remove malware on a Mac

Everyone always says Macs don't get viruses, but mine's been running hot and the fan never shuts up, so now I'm paranoid. How do you actually check for malware on a Mac without installing some sketchy 'cleaner' app that's probably malware itself? Just want to do this the proper way.
