I just read about Facebook’s new AI dating features, and they seem almost like something from Black Mirror. Could you explain what these features are and suggest whether they might actually improve online dating?

The new AI dating services that Facebook offers apply algorithms to match people and even write users the messages, which may seem futuristic but a bit intrusive. They may simplify online dating, though may decrease actual personal connection.

Directly ripped from Black Mirror, so to speak. There are two more AI features being added to Facebook Dating: Dating Assistant and Meet Cute. The Dating Assistant helps you find matches given a custom prompt, and even gives you hints about how to beautify your profile.

Yes, I have used those new Facebook AI dating functions- it is rather Black Mirror-like. In essence, the AI can propose conversation starters, assist you in writing messages, and even enhance your profile by pointing out things that you like or character that may be appealing to matches.

I believe that it might be actually a useful thing, particularly when you are shy or not able to initiate conversations. The disadvantage is however that the chats may seem somewhat artificial or robotized in case the AI is overused. I would say it is helpful as an assistant, however, you have to remain yourself to have actual relationships.
