Hi! I’m trying to use a serial-based application on Windows 10, but my PC doesn’t have a physical COM port. Is there a way I can still run and test it? What are the best tools or methods for setting up a virtual COM port, and how well do they actually work in real use?

A COM port driver in Windows 10 enables communication between devices and virtual serial ports. Virtual serial port setup helps applications connect through emulated COM ports for testing, hardware communication, debugging, and data transfer purpose

I had a similar problem on Windows 10 where I needed to use a serial-based application, but I didn’t have a physical COM port available.
I solved it by using https://www.virtual-serial-port.org/ It let me create a pair of virtual COM ports that behave like real hardware ports. After setting it up, I assigned one of the COM ports in my application, and it worked normally

To set up a virtual COM port driver on Windows 10, install virtual serial port software such as com0com or Virtual Serial Port Driver. After installation, create paired COM ports through the software interface, assign port numbers, and connect applications that require serial communication for testing, debugging, or device emulation purposes.

Install a good virtual serial port driver or virtual serial port software first to get a virtual serial port up and running on Windows 10. Once it is installed, you will check the assigned COM port number in the Device Manager. Virtual Serial Port Driver by Electronic Team is a popular tool for many developers to test devices, debug and quickly create paired virtual COM ports.

You will usually need to install a virtual COM port driver like FTDI or Prolific depending on your device hardware. Once installed, it will pop right up in your Device Manager under Ports.
